Welsh Under 21's Event Four
No#1 seed Duane Jones showed why he is considered such a fine prospect by winning this event. It was Duanes 4th consecutive appearance in the final of an Under 21 event this season.
He reached the final with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Welsh Under 16 International Rhys Thomas that included a magnificent 127 clearance in frame two.
Jamie Clarke was his opponent in the final. Surprisingly Jamie had not reached a final in this age group this year and seemed determined to retain the title he won last season. He led two frames to one and was well in the lead in the next only for Duane to somehow snatch it on the black. The decider was a thriller with both players going for their shots. It looked as if Jamie had just done enough when Duane potted an outrageous blue gaining position on the pink which he took for the match and the title of 2011 Welsh under 21s Champion.
With the Welsh Champion and top ranked player being nominated to represent Wales at the World Under 21's Championship, all the pressure was on Jamie as he had to win this event to qualify. Edward Topham will now be nominated as second highest ranked player.
Unfortunately, at this moment no country has come forward to host this year's World Under 21's Championship. The winner of this event is usually given a place on the professional main tour so we hope that someone comes forward as it is a great opportunity for our players to gain professional status.
