Mens Event 1
Mens Event One concluded at the weekend, with victory for Jackson Page.
The qualifying stages had taken place the week before. Down in Ammanford, Gavin Lewis, Ben Jones and Paul Doughton were the qualifiers, with the Snookerworld facilities again playing beautifully and yielding many high breaks. After overcoming former European Under 18s Champion Tyler Rees in Round One Lewis cruised past Dale Hughes and Leon Cosker to book his place in the finals. In arguably the toughest section of this draw former World Amateur Championship semi-finalist Ben Jones beat Craig Price before winning the match of the day against David Roberts. After Jones had raced into a two frame lead with breaks of 78 and 58 Roberts hit back with 70 and 50 of his own but Jones pulled out all the stops to win the decider. He continued this momentum to battle his way past Andrew Pagett to qualify. After a titanic battle with Ieuan Roberts in Round One Doughton eased past Ross Jones and rookie Rhydian Fox (a young player to look out for in the future) to earn his place in the last eight. Over at Redz, the young guns came storming through. Ben Fortey and Dylan Emery both qualified after being drawn in prelim matches, Dylan bagging a tasty 84 en route to his qualifying show down with Thomas Lancastle, Ben facing off against 2018 Welsh Amateur Semi-finalist Mark Stoneman. Jackson Page took the third qualifying spot seeing off David Donovan. Between Ben, Dylan and Jackson they only dropped 4 frames in 11 matches. Up North, the players returned to Ewloe Social Club, with just two qualifying spots left to play for. In stark contrast to Redz, this time it was old stagers Elfed Evans and Steve Thomas that came through, with some excellent performances from Darroch Mackie (taking Elfed to a decider) and Matt Riberts (his 3-0 defeat by Steve not really representative of his day)
The finals draw pitched Gavin v Elfed, Dylan v Steve, Paul v Ben (F) and Jackson v Ben (J). Elfed and Gavin went to a decider, but the other quarter final matches went the way of Dylan, Ben (F) and Jackson all by 3 frames to nil. Tough match play by Elfed allowed him to edge Dylan 3-0 to make the final, whilst Jackson beat Ben by the same scoreline.
And so to the final. Whilst Elfed took one of the frame, Jackson took the match to Elfed and ran out a 3-1 winner, starting the season as he ended the last
